J. Lohr Gesture Rosé

2012 J. Lohr Gesture Grenache Rosé

VINTAGE
The ideal season for growing Grenache Rosé might offer a wet winter to feed the roots, cool spring temperatures to nurture flowers and lots of warm 90 degree summer days with cool nights to ripen the fruit while preserving acidity. The real world never works quite that way, but we can always dream. The 2012 season followed a dry winter in Paso Robles, leaving vines on the smaller size. Our springtime temperatures regularly topped 90 degrees, causing the bloom to “shatter”, leaving loose clusters to ripen through the summer. One thing we can always count on are the cool 50 degree nights throughout the summer in Paso Robles, which always keep this wine fresh and bright with acidity. A winemaker’s appetite for this pink “liquid delicacy” never dissipates as we chase the endless summer.

VINEYARD
30% of the fruit is from one of our newest vineyards, located about 5 miles north of our Paso Robles winery. This vineyard has helped us strengthen our Rhône program and this enticing Grenache Rosé. The site is located near the northern boundary of the Paso Robles appellation and supports both our sustainably-farmed vineyard and an active wildlife corridor. The remaining 70% of the Grenache came from two vineyards in the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles, an area known for world class Grenache, while a splash of Counoise contributes a peppery note.

2011 J. Lohr Gesture Grenache Rosé

VINTAGE
The 2011 winegrowing season in Paso Robles was set back when a heavy frost hit the area on April 8th and 9th, just as vines broke dormancy. The new tender shoots were affected in roughly one third of our vineyard blocks, and growth was set back by nearly two weeks as we waited for secondary buds to push the replacement shoots. With ample soil moisture from a wet winter, vine growth flourished in May and June. The low summer temperatures were similar to those of 2010, which was the coolest season in a decade. The resulting wine had brighter fruit acidity and fruit character at lower alcohol levels, making it a wonderful summertime Grenache Rosé.

VINEYARD
One of our newest vineyards, located about 5 miles north of our Paso Robles winery, provided 60% of the fruit for this wine. This vineyard has helped us strengthen our Rhône program and is the primary source of our enticing Grenache Rosé. 2010 J. Lohr Gesture Grenache Rosé

When comparing California wine styles to those of the Old World, one theme that emerges is the riper style and generally higher alcohol content of California wines. The French in particular are accustomed to a climate where adding sugar is required in most vintages, while California sunshine nearly always assures fully ripe fruit. (Some would say overripe.) In the 2010 vintage we saw cooler daily temperatures and greater hangtime in all our Paso Robles vineyards, and we achieved more intensely ripe flavors at lower Brix levels than we’ve seen in a decade. Grenache benefits from cooler seasonal temperatures, as this aids in color development and preserves the delicate “thiol” components that contribute fruitiness to the aroma and finish.

2009 J. Lohr Gesture Rosé

VINTAGE
2009 represented a return to normalcy after the exceedingly short crop of the previous vintage due to frosts and heat spikes. Rainfall for 2009 was about half of normal, but enough to fuel a successful vintage to full ripeness. Early ripening Rhone varieties, harvested before the mid-September heat wave, fared quite well. Later ripening varieties like Cabernet, were unaffected by the heat and matured in latter October on either side of a significant rain event on the 13th of the month.

Winemaker's Comments

Lovely, bright raspberry hues adorn this Grenache Rosé in the glass. Aromas of strawberry and Asian Pear dominate this wine in its youth. A hint of bubblegum lies in the background. Cranberry flavors are showcased with embracing fruit acidity and set the stage for a great aperitif. A year or two of cellaring should bring out a bit of orange blossom in the bottle bouquet. Enjoy through the summer as you would the great wines of Bandol, with oysters or coquilles St. Jacques.
