Pinot Noir

Highlands Bench

Aromas of dark black cherries with dashes of mocha, orange zest, cola, and dried flowers. Concentrated raspberry flavors layer on top of a creamy, mouth-coating texture with a bit of anise and peppercorn on the finish.

Monterey Costa Vineyard

Vineyard

This limited release Pinot Noir comes from the Costa Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey. We were invited to partner with the Costa family to establish a Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay vineyard in 2008 on the family property. We participated in soil evaluation, vineyard layout, and clone and rootstock selection, ultimately choosing the highest elevations and most gravelly soils for Pinot Noir planting. The close proximity to Monterey Bay, the eastern slope and aspect, and the elevation above the valley floor provide a cool, sunny, and ideal environment for growing intensely flavored Burgundian varieties. The Pinot Noir clones selected for this 2022 vintage were a 70/30 blend of Dijon origin 667 and 777.

Vintage

Monterey County received abundant winter rainfall December 2022 through March 2023; the much-needed rainstorms rejuvenated the soil after several years of drought-like conditions. Daytime temperatures were exceptionally cool spring through summer - forcing clusters to mature slowly. Thankfully, steady weather held out for the duration of autumn which allowed us to pick berries in pristine condition with outstanding flavor development, extractable color, and balanced natural acidity. The Pinot Noir for this bottling was hand-harvested on the mornings of October 5th and 6th. The fruit was sorted and then bled 12% to increase concentration prior to fermentation. It was aged 8 months on light lees in Burgundy-style French oak barrels, 38% new wood, prior to bottling in June, 2024.
